RACING HISTORY TO LIFE
M. Schalnat Great book about early racing and Indy
This book took me back to the advent of racing. I felt like I could hear the sounds, smell the dirt and oil, and feel what the drivers felt when things went right and ever so wrong. I could clearly envision the struggles of building the speedway and enjoyed the tour of the grounds/track with Carl Fisher. I have a much better appreciation for how the building of Indy completely changed the sport. In the end, I feel like I know Barney Oldfield, Fisher, and many of the early heroes and pathfinders. You should read this book if you want to know why Indy is Indy, way before it became our Indy.
C.R.R. Barney Oldfield and the early 1900s racing scene is alive in this book
There are many stories of Barney Oldfield. This is the racing career of Barney Oldfield. All the stories, newspaper clippings, racing and experiences have been put forth in a biography which rolls through the timeline of his life. Early Ormond beach racing, early one-on-one racing, early Indianapolis speedway racing is all described in wonderful accuracy tying together all the facets of his life. If you want to know about the speed merchant of speed merchants at the dawn of speed, this is the book for you.
Martin SinzigImmersive, fascinating
From the beginning, this book paints a wonderful picture of the beginning of the speed era. it's easy to read and very immersive. the writing draws you in and gives some fascinating insights. the lack of better and more pictures and of a register doesn't diminish this accomplishment. So overall: Great book for anyone who wants to learn more about the dawn of speed in America.
